USC ESPORTS WRAP-UP #6
By: Richard Wang
Welcome back USC games! This week, the E sports team continued to go through their NECC matches as usual. This issue, it’s team shooter week! We have two exciting matches for you guys this week from our Marvel Rivals and Overwatch teams! Looking forward, look out for more ‘Deep Dives’ into the other teams, like last week’s issue— Rocket League is up next!
Marvel Rivals: Revenge against SFU
Our Marvel Rivals team took a decisive victory-revenge against SFU, who they lost to 0-2 in placements, with a 3 map clean sweep! Starting off on a hiccup with harsh target bans, it didn’t take long for USC to realize SFU’s weak point: Their fragile support backline. Even though the team wasn’t able to run their signature Storm comp, they were able to force SFU into a Luna mirror, with their hitscan dps, Lcie, on Punisher. By pushing the advantage with their superior backline and winning ult-trades, with their tank Hades getting a 3-piece ‘with a rock lol,’ USC redeemed themselves with a huge regular season win!
Overwatch: Dive the Dive
Our Overwatch team went against Loyola Marymount University (LMU) last week with Lilyboi on tank, NotKorean and AddL on hitscan and flex dps respectively, and Shomit and Doomguy subbing in on support, the team started off losing Lijiang to LMU but took the next two, New Queen Street and Watchpoint: Gibraltar in “a hard-fought tug of war.” As USC switched out their slower Zarya-Reaper comp for a Hazard centric one into an LMU Winston, it became clear that there was only one choice: To dive the dive— or so to out-dive. While USC’s Hazard was able to take the first map, LMU’s Winston was just always slightly ahead, leading to a decisive victory for LMU as they too took another two maps in a row. Win or loss, this was an exciting match, a dogfight for dive superiority, with excellent performances from both teams!
